Shooting the same shots on a tripod with the same focal length on the lens the 300 HS uses its extra MPs well. When looking at the images from each camera at 100%, at the wide angle zoom setting and normal zoom setting both cameras have about the same relative slight softness on the edges. However the 300 HS has more MP so it actually produces much more detail in the image. I think it was smart for Canon to keep the MP at 12 because last years models while being 14 MP (SD1400) didn't give any extra detail from what I could tell than the 12 MP version (SD1300). The SD1400 was basically just creating larger files. When zooming in the telephoto setting the 300 HS clearly produced a sharper image than the SD1000. Often cameras have sweet spots in the zoom range in which it will produce crisper images. The 300 HS has consistently good sharpness throughout it's zoom range.

The image processing with the HS system truly works to reduce noise at higher ISOs enabling people to produce better quality images in low light. The improvement in image quality gets more and more visible the greater and greater the ISO. ISO 400 with the 300 HS was almost as good as ISO 200 on the SD1000. ISO 800 on the 300 HS was a tad better than ISO 400 on the SD1000. ISO 1600 on the 300 HS was between ISO 400 and 800 on the SD1000. ISO 3200 on the 300 HS produced the same quality of image (noise) as ISO 800 on the SD1000. A 2 stop in film speed improvement is big.

1080p video and slow motion:

With good light, the 300 HS produces wonderful smooth 1080 videos. If you look at a lot of HD videos from compact cameras the video often looks jumpy. From what I've seen it wasn't until you got to the Canon G12 or Panasonic LX5 that the video looked smooth. Both of those cameras only shoot 720p whereas this camera shoots 1080p. The video also very good detail. It truly looks HD.

If you are wanting zoom and continuous AF with your video this camera is the one you want compared to the 100 HS which doesn't allow you to zoom. The continuous AF with face recognition is stellar with this camera in video mode. I was videoing my wife while she was driving. It focused on her face. I switched to the scenery outside. It immediately focused on that. I then went back to my wife and it found her face and focused on it right away. I even videoed her reflection in the rear view mirror and it found her face in the mirror no problem and focused on it. AMAZING!!!!

Commenting on a complaint I've read about the zoom being slow in video mode. If you like getting motion sickness whenever someone rapidly zooms in or out during their video this is not your camera. As smooth looking as the video is, the zoom is also. The smooth zoom creates nice looking transitions instead of warp speed ahead looks.

The slow motion is a fun feature that works well. You need to have good lighting though. In low light even with high ISO's it produced very dark videos. In a review someone commented that it should have sound with the slow motion video. I honestly don't know how that could work unless you want to listen to everything at 1/5 it's normal speed. I think it's a good thing that it doesn't have sound with the slow motion videos.

Peligroso isn’t the world’s greatest tequila, but it is definitely a cut above the Patron that everyone likes to pretend is so amazing. Plus its extra alcohol helps justify it’s price tag of between $43 and $55, depending on which type you pick up. When it comes time for me to go back to the tequila well, I’ll plan to take shots of the Anejo and make cocktails with the Silver. I can definitely see using Peligroso to kick my Beergaritas up a notch.

My family has the latest Samsung Andriod phones but needed another line so we took a Nokia 710 phone; the entire family likes the Nokia best but since I'm the MCSE in the family and the rest have Apple Laptops, they have to stick with Android.

First off, this phone has excellent battery life (WiFi will drain more power), and it is fast (4G). You have an APP menu standard but with a single swipe you are into a windows menu. This phone's Operating System is excellent. Having also had the Windows Dopod (HTC) Windows 5.5 & Windows 6.0 Operating Systems while in Asia, I have to commend Microsoft and Nokia for a superb phone.

Nokia has APPs for download or from the marketplace - there may not be as many APPs in general, but you have all the one's a guy needs - ESPN, GPS, MAPs, Messages, NETFLIX, etc.

All I can say is Android and Apple step aside. This Operating System is going to take the market by storm.

Amazon reviews shouldn't focus on price, but it is hard not to with this device. On price alone, this is a five star device. However when looked at the Fire overall, and when compared with other touch devices (what little there is to compare it to), I have to give it four stars, since there are a few areas I feel could use definite improvement.
As a long-time Kindle fan I was eager to get my hands on a Fire. For the most part I've found that it does what I wanted it to, which is be the one device I can take with me anywhere. There are some great features; the reader app is excellent (though not without flaws), the app store experience is terrific, videos are fantastic, and the device is quick and for the most part dead-simple to use, all thanks to the services Amazon provides. And of course the extras that come with Prime membership really make it a real value - I won't be cancelling my Netflix streaming account just yet (watching Netflix on the Fire works very well) but I imagine within a year Amazon's free streaming video catalog will be just as good as Netflix. The free "lending library" book every month really is the icing on the cake though, and makes Prime membership a no-brainer. The hardware itself is solid and has a quality feel, it's just the right size for one-handed use, and the screen is fantastic (for an LCD screen) with good brightness and excellent color, and a very wide viewing angle. So as a reader, video player and music streaming device the Fire excels, and as an occasional browsing, emailing, game playing tablety thing it does pretty well.

Well, it does give up on any reasonable manual control, things like setting shutter speed, lens aperture, ISO. What access you do have to that level of control is buried deep inside menus. It took Canon a while to realize that for most of us, if we wanted to fool with that kind of thing on a regular basis, we would be using a different camera. This camera is designed to leverage convenience over extreme control or nth degree quality.

The Canon's Digic 4 processor & CMOS sensor make this camera truly point and shoot. When it comes to baseball mascot, Phillie Phanatic is one of the best in the business, and he is also one of the toughest. He proved that the latter yesterday some evening while working with the Phillies triple-A-farm team, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs overtime.
While some fans behind the first base dugout during the top which was entertaining, third inning are the Phanatic in the neck found just so happens challenge with a ball, where Tom Burgoyne's head in the costume is positioned. Burgoyne played with for a while before finally made, Lehigh Valley Hospital, where he was treated in the emergency room, before he released.
The Phillies still need to place the Phanatic in the 15-day DL, which means that they probably expect him to return to action, when the team House again tomorrow to the Oakland Athletics within a three-game weekend to take.

O.J. Simpson Told Oprah That He Murdered Nicole In Self-Defense

Following the series finale of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” Oprah stated that one of her greatest regrets was not getting O.J. Simpson to confess to murdering his former wife, Nicole Brown. Now it appears as though she may get what she was looking for.
Reports have indicated that Oprah has been in touch with Simpson as he serves a nine-year sentence for robbery and kidnapping at Nevada’s Lovelock Correctional Centre. She has been trying to get an interview with the former football star and it seems as though he is now ready to take part and admit that he did in fact murder Nicole on the night of June 12, 1994.
During a conversation with one of Oprah’s producers, Simpson said, “”Tell Oprah that yes, I did it. I killed Nicole, but it was in self-defence. She pulled a knife on me and I had to defend myself,” according to an inside source.
Simpson was reportedly enraged by the fact that Nicole was treating him poorly and having sex with other men at her condo while their kids were present. After an incident at a restaurant during the night of the murder, Simpson went home and worked himself into a rampage before returning to Nicole’s condo to give her “a piece of his mind.” The Daily Mail describes what followed:

When he arrived and no one answered at the house, he started pounding the door and shouting, according to the report.
The door allegedly then swung open and Nicole was standing there with a kitchen knife in her hand.

‘O.J. told the producer, “she was yelling go away! Go away! And waving the knife around at me. At one point she was lunging at me with the knife and I was just trying to talk to her. Nicole stepped out of the apartment – slashing the knife in the air.
‘”I was in such a rage that something just snapped. I couldn’t take her constant taunting of me with other men or her using drugs and drinking while my kids were living with her. I went beserk.
‘”Before I knew what I was doing I took the knife away from Nicole and started slashing at her. I cut her over and over again until she was lifeless. I was shocked at my own anger – I had killed the woman I had loved for so long..”‘

Simpson told the producer that he also killed Ron Goldman as an act of self-defense.
Should O.J. confess to the murders in an interview with Oprah, he will not suffer any legal consequences under the law of double jeopardy, which forbids a second trial following an acquittal.

Everyone is familiar with Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster, legendary, semi-mythical creatures around whom numerous campfire stories are spun and about whom hippies on mushrooms and wise old Indians tell fantastic tales, but those are just a couple of the more famous examples of the many strange and mysterious creatures who both terrify and capture the imaginations of people around the world. And since we here at Guyism are men of science who believe in educating the public in between our drunken bouts of debauchery, we thought we’d take a look at eight of these bewildering beasts, the weirdest of the weird, the creepiest of the creepy. They are the eight freakiest creatures to be found in the world of cryptozoology, which is the name given to the study of these strange beasts/beings/whatever the hell they are. And while you may end up catching Bigfoot making lewd gestures at your wife and rifling through your campsite in search of munchies (Little known fact: Bigfoot is a gigantic stoner. It’s true.) that’s nothing compared to what the fantastic creatures on this list would do if they ever got a hold of you.
8 Tarasque

The Tarasque was first noted in old French legends, where it was said that the creature was a dragon with the claws of a bear and a tail with a stinger on the end of it. Apparently, this dragon lived in a lake in the south of France, from which it occasionally emerged with a mighty roar to hunt its victims, usually virgins. Ladies, there’s a moral in there somewhere. Anyway, supposedly, St. Martha showed up in town and tamed the beast with the soothing music of the church. After gaining the poor dude’s trust, she lured it out of the water where it was beaten to death by the townsfolk. Today there is even a festival celebrating the creature’s untimely demise. But it would seem that the French Tarasque was not alone, as apparently in Vietnam, in the Halong Bay, another Tarasque dragon has been spotted. There’s no word about whether this one prefers virgins or Vietnamese hookers (there is a joke to be made here about a whore telling the dragon “Me love you long time,” and the dragon catching syphilis and returning home with a love child, but we are above such nonsense here at Guyism), but hopefully St. Martha minds her business this time.
7 Thunderbirds

Thunderbirds have been spotted all over the world since seemingly the beginning of time. Birds as big as small airplanes, they were mentioned prominently by several old Indian tribes and today they have been spotted flying everywhere from Pennsylvania to Alaska. Like giant eagles, the Indians used to say that the Thunderbirds would swoop down and grab deer or even people and carry them away to a mountain top where they would be eaten. So the next time you see a huge shadow swooping overhead, you can probably chalk it up to one of two things: either you’re about to get eaten by a Thunderbird or you’ve been drinking too much Thunderbird and are seeing things. Oh well, I guess you should have gone with the Colt .45. Then you’d only have to worry about being eaten by a giant Billy D. Williams. Then again, I suppose that is terrifying enough in its own strange way.
6 Pope Lick Monster

The Pope Lick Monster is a strange beast who has been reported to live in the vicinity of a railway trestle one hundred feet above the Pope Lick Creek in Louisville, Kentucky. Apparently, this creature looks like a human/goat hybrid with a human body, furry goat legs and horns on his head and he/she/it lures its victims to their death either through hypnosis or by mimicking the voices of loved ones late at night, which causes the poor victim to believe that somebody they love is in danger or trapped on the railway trestle. After the victim climbs out on the trestle, he either gets run down by a train or he falls to his death in the creek far below. But that’s all fairly ordinary monster stuff. What makes the Pope Lick Monster different is that it supposedly also carries around a great big bloody axe to chop off its victims heads. Why? I don’t know. Maybe it’s because the beast gets impatient. I mean, you try waiting around for some hypnotized fool to fall off a trestle or to get hit by a train. That’s some time consuming villainy right there. The Pope Lick Monster probably has places to be and people to kill and so sometimes he just has to get the ol’ axe out. But the best part about the Pope Lick Monster story is that it is rumored to be the offspring of a horny old farmer and his pet goat. No, really. It would probably piss you off too if you found out that your dad made your mom sleep outside in a pen and eat garbage. After all, it’s not the 1800’s anymore. Women have rights.
5 Chupacabra

This freaky dude has been spotted all over Latin America and in the American Southwest. The Chupacabra — or goatsucker (I wonder what would happen if the Chupacabra and the Pope Lick Monster ever met…) — is infamous for raiding the livestock of terrified farmers, eating chickens and pigs, and, of course, goats. There are all manner of creepy stories surrounding the Chupacabra, everything from hissing and flying at terrified farmers to breaking into homes like a wino, mumbling at the owners and then attacking their children. Who the hell knows what the Chupacabra actually is? Maybe it’s just pissed because it has to live with the name Goatsucker. I mean, come on, that would bother any of you, wouldn’t it? You get caught sucking one goat and pretty soon that’s the only thing anybody cares about. If that goat didn’t want to get sucked then it shouldn’t have batted those pretty little eyes. I’m guessing the Chupacabra understands only all too well what the Pope Lick Monster’s dad had to deal with all those years. I guess if there’s one thing we should all take away from this list it’s that we should all stay the hell away from goats.
4 Burrunjor

The Burrunjor is on this list for one reason and one reason alone: because it looks like a damn T-Rex. Indeed. Apparently, for centuries, the Aborigines of Australia told the tale of a 25 foot tall modern dinosaur that closely resembles the infamous Tyrannosaurus Rex, king of the dinosaurs and also the award winning star of Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park (but don’t tell that to the Raptors who supposedly earned a reputation as real divas on the set). But these aren’t just Aboriginal legends. Oh no. Apparently, during the 1950s and ‘60s, the Burrunjor mutilated animals and terrorized Australian farmers, creating a wave of hysteria that included reports of mysterious giant animals roaring in the forests and jungles and farmers running for their lives. I mean, I guess it makes sense. Jurassic Park was set on an island and Australia’s an island with a bunch of other weird beasts found nowhere else in the world so… why not? Oh crap, I probably just gave Paul Hogan an idea for Crocodile Dundee IV. Or maybe I just gave Steven Spielberg the best possible idea for the recently announced Jurassic Park IV. Or maybe, just maybe, I inadvertently created the most amazing crossover flick imaginable. Hold on, I’ll be right back. I just have to give the fine people at SyFy a call and let them know I have their next original movie.
3 Orang Bati

In the jungles of Indonesia lives the Orang Bati, a mysterious creature who supposedly resembles an ape with giant bat-like wings and a long tail. Yeah, that’s right, in Indonesia they actually have flying monkeys like in The Wizard of Oz. Only these flying monkeys occasionally show up and drag away the village children for a late night snack. Well goddamn, I know where I’m spending my next vacation. These freaky creatures are supposedly also found in Papua New Guinea where they are known as Ropen which means “Flying Demon.” Well, okay then. Look, we spend all our time worrying about being stuck in traffic or about raccoons rifling through our garbage, while in Indonesia, there are villagers who spend all their time literally fighting off hordes of flying demon monkeys. Then again, those flying demon monkeys probably don’t leave the trash scattered all over the driveway so who’s to say who really has it worse?
2 Aswang

The Aswang are legendary shape-shifters who supposedly make their abode in the Philippines, where they switch back and forth from fairly harmless human forms to terrifying monsters with giant snouts who suck fetuses from the wombs of pregnant mothers. Whoa! I mean, yeah, I have been known to turn into a bit of a monster myself when the sun goes down and I get a few drinks in me, but I tend to draw the line at fetus sucking. Part vampire, part witch, part… whatever, these terrifying creatures supposedly will eat corpses and babies and have even been known to snatch up an adult or two. Flying around late at night, the shape-shifting Aswang descend upon their unsuspecting victims, eat them, and -– here’s where shit gets completely out of hand –- they then fashion a replica of said victim out of a tree trunk and then that replica, uh, comes to life and goes home where it then soon grows sick and dies. I… uh, well… huh. From fetus sucking to carving people out of wood just so they can die, the Aswang have earned their place on this terrifying and f*cked up list.
1 Kikiyaon

The Kikiyaon roams the plains of Africa and is said to resemble a large owl. Big deal, right? Well, yeah, when you consider the meaning behind the Kikiyaon’s name –- The Soul Cannibal. Well, goddamn. The Soul Cannibal supposedly has huge teeth and talons, which it uses to tear its victims to shreds after it swoops down on them on the African plains. But even worse than that is the psychological terror the Kikiyaon inspires. Making noises that range anywhere from a disturbing low grunt to the sound of a man being strangled to death, the Kikiyaon’s terrifying voice can be heard for miles around on the African savannah and it is said that even if a victim manages to escape they will later die of some mysterious illness. If that’s not bad enough, some African tribes believe that the Kikiyaon can actually kill people in their dreams. Yes. It would seem that the Kikiyaon is basically the Freddy Krueger of cryptozoology. Well hell, I guess that explains the whole Soul Cannibal name. From terrifying people and then swooping down from above like some mutant death angel to cold killing people in their sleep, the Kikiyaon has earned the number one place on this list. Soul Cannibal. Good Lord.

Viacom sues Cablevision over its TV-streaming Optimum for iPad app

A day after Viacom took a break from courtroom battling over Time Warner Cable's iPad app, the media giant has filed a lawsuit against Cablevision over the Optimum for iPad app. Viacom wants a revised agreement before it sees its content appear on new screens, but Cablevision claims that cable service on the iPad is the same as on any TV. Sure, Japan's had its fair share of holographic and robotic pop idols, but they always seem to wander a bit too far into the uncanny valley. Might an amalgam composite pop-star fare better? Nope, still creepy -- but at least its a new kind of creepy. Eguchi Aimi, a fictional idol girl created for a Glico candy ad, is comprised of the eyes, ears, nose, and other facial elements of girls from AKB48, a massive (over 50 members) all-female pop group from Tokyo. Toyota premiers smart charging G-Stations in Japan, world instantly jealous

Recharging tired EVs and plug-in hybrids in Japan just got a little more exciting thanks to Toyota's upcoming G-Station charger, which relies on contact-less smart-cards to identify vehicles and owners. Toyota's Windows Azure-powered Smart Center drives the machines, which allows users to connect to the internet and use smartphone apps to find chargers, receive notifications, and check usage history. The G-Station will be coming this July in two flavors, creatively named Type A for the standard and Type B for the more advanced model. Pricing for the aforementioned units will be 280,000 yen ($3,469 USD) and 448,000 yen ($5,549 USD) respectively. Toyota is expecting to sell around 3,000 units by the end of 2012, making these stations available to its retail car dealers, shopping malls and restaurants. Soon the outside of pachinko parlors will be just as electric as the inside.

AMD resigns from BAPCo consortium, denounces SYSmark 2012 benchmark

It's not uncommon for a company to make a public endorsement from time to time, but AMD today drafted a press release to announce that it's not endorsing a product -- BAPCo's SYSmark 2012 benchmark -- going so far as to drop out of the non-profit org to drive its point home. AMD claims that it attempted to work with BAPCo to focus testing on real-world usage, rather than traditional benchmarks that don't necessarily represent how we use computers today. Nigel Dessau, AMD's CMO, explains the decision on AMD's blog:

"Unfortunately, our good intentions were met with an outcome that we believe does a disservice to the industry and our customers. We weren't able to effect positive change within BAPCo, and the resulting benchmark continues to distort workload performance and offers even less transparency to end users. Once again, BAPCo chose to ignore the opportunity to promote openness and transparency."

The biggest issue appears to be that SYSmark highlights processor speed while ignoring GPU power -- a significant flaw, considering GPUs now play a large role in overall system performance.

"Augmented Reality Cinema" is a concept which would spot when you're in a famous movie location and then trigger playback of the relevant scene. Whereas a normal digital camera captures a snapshot of light hitting a sensor, a light field camera first separates rays of light in order to individually record their color, intensity and direction. This extra information opens up a world of possibilities, including the ability to focus on any depth of field within a taken photo, observe a 3D-type effect even without specs, and boost images taken in extremely low light. Although light field cameras have been around for some time, they haven't been commercially viable. Now though, Lytro has secured backing worth $50million to bring a "competitively priced" camera to market "later this year" -- we'll see if they can beat similar plenoptic technology from Adobe to market.
